Trade Unions and Employers Association signed a joint commitment in Jakarta on 6 August 2020 to protect safety and health, business sustainability and welfare of workers in the export-oriented garment/footwear sectors in Indonesia amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

This process benefits from the support of the global initiative from the International Organization of Employers (IOE), the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), and the International Labour Organization (ILO) and Global Brands to catalyse action from across the global garment supply chain to support manufacturers to survive the economic disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and to protect garment workers’ income, health and employment.

Shoya Yoshida, General Secretary of ITUC-AP, was invited as a witness to this event and spoke about the importance of social dialogue, universal social protection and labour protection floor which guarantees respect for fundamental rights, most importantly freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining, an adequate minimum wage, maximum limits on working hours, and occupational safety and health. “Now we need to shift the policy paradigm in the direction of human-centred approach on the basis of the ILO Centenary Declaration”.

A joint commitment is attached.
