The ITUC-Asia Pacific strongly condemns the brutal killing of Dandy Miguel, chairpreson of PAMANTIK-Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) last night, 28 March 2021, while on his way home on board his motorcycle. Dandy Miguel is the president of Lakas ng Nagkakaisang Manggagawa ng Fuji Electric and a member of the National Council of KMU.

We abhor the atrocities against trade unionists, labour organisers, and activists in the Philippines. The killing of Dandy Miguel came three weeks after the so-called Bloody Sunday crackdown that left nine activists dead.

Shoya Yoshida, General Secretary of the ITUC-Asia Pacific, calls for justice for Dandy Miguel as well that the over 50 trade unionists and workers that were killed under the Duterte administration. "The spate of killings and atrocities against trade unionists must stop! These are grave violations of the right to life and the internationally guaranteed rights to organise and to freedom of association. We call on the concerned agencies of the Philippine government to investigate, prosecute, and convict the perpetrators of these incidents. Justice must be served to Dandy Miguel and other victims!"

We denounce the culture of impunity in the Philippines that emboldens the serious violations of human and labour rights without accountability. This culture of impunity must end. The Philippine government must fulfil its duty to protect and uphold the rights of its citizens, including the rights of workers to organise and bargain for their rights without being subjected to fear, threats, and intimidation.

The ITUC-Asia Pacific extends our heartfelt condolences to the family, relatives, friends, and fellow unionists of Dandy Miguel.

Justice for Dandy Miguel! Stop killing unionists!
