Lee Cheuk Yan, General Secretary of Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions (HKCTU), was found guilty for participating in unauthorised assembly against the abuses of police power in August 2019. The conviction of Lee Cheuk Yan and six other prominent opposition activists came on Thursday, 1 April 2021.
Shoya Yoshida, General Secretary of the ITUC-Asia Pacific, said: “We condemn the conviction of Brother Lee Cheuk Yan and the other pro-democracy activists. The verdict is an attack not only on the seven defendants, but also on Hong Kong people’s internationally recognised and constitutional rights to freedom of association and peaceful assembly. Taking part in a peaceful assembly is not a crime, but a right that should be respected, defended, and upheld.”
“We stand in solidarity with Brother Lee and his fellow defendants in their relentless struggle for democracy amid this latest backlash against pro-democracy voices.”
The ITUC-Asia Pacific reiterated its demand to the Hong Kong government to drop the charges against the pro-democracy activists and to uphold its duty under the international labour conventions and human rights treaties that it ratified.
The sentencing of Lee Cheuk Yan is scheduled on 16 April 2021.
Shoya Yoshida called on the affiliates of ITUC-Asia Pacific to show their support and solidarity with Lee Cheuk Yan and the other convicted activists.
