Affiliates of the ITUC–Asia Pacific, together with BWI, Union Aid Abroad–APHEDA, and partner organisations, adopted a conference statement at the 3rd Regional Conference on Asbestos held on 9–10 December 2025 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The statement reaffirmed that a safe and healthy workplace is a fundamental workers’ right and reiterated that no form of asbestos, including chrysotile, can be used safely. Participants raised serious concerns over the continued concentration of global asbestos use in the Asia-Pacific region despite its well-documented health risks, while noting recent progress towards bans and stronger safeguards in several countries. The conference called for urgent action by governments, regional bodies, and international institutions to ban all forms of asbestos and ensure a Just Transition for affected workers and communities.
