In this resolution, the 3rd ITUC - Asia Pacific Regional Conference expresses its deepest sympathy on the devastating loss of life and properties in Nepal. On Saturday, 25 April 2015 at 11:56 local time, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake as recorded by Nepal’s National Seismological Centre (NSC) struck Barpak in the historic district of Gorkha, about 76km northwest of Kathmandu. The catastrophic earthquake was followed by more than 300 aftershocks greater than magnitude 4.0 (as of 7 June 2015). The destruction was widespread, covering residential and government buildings, heritage sites, schools, and health posts, rural roads, bridges, water supply systems, agricultural land, trekking routes, hydropower plants, and sports facilities.
The Conference supports Nepali affiliate’s vision of Reconstruction: By Creating Decent Jobs. It encourages the Trade Union Solidarity Support Organisations to join the International meeting to prepare Nepali unions’ road map of reconstruction to be held in Kathmandu on September 3-4, 2015. The Conference also supports Nepal's ongoing initiation to declare its new constitution. It calls on Nepali political players to recognise trade unions’ role to restore full-fledged democracy and asks to address unions’ issues of rights, social protection, labour commission, and representation.
