In this resolution, the ITUC-AP notes that freedom of expression is essential to the effective functioning of trade unions and democracy. With this, the Council expresses its dismay that persons exercising their right to freedom of expression have been treated as dangerous criminals, shackled, and sentenced to manifestly excessive prison terms; and demands the immediate release of all political prisoners in all countries and the repeal of national laws that are deployed to intimidate critics and stifle free speech.
