9th Regional General Council - ILO Recommendation No. 202 on Social Protection Floors

Document
Resolution
1
Nov 2013

The General Council observes that 1.4 billion people live on less than USD 1.25 a day (World Bank), 2.6 billion people do not have access to adequate sanitation, 925 million suffer from chronic hunger; 9 million children under the age of five die from preventable diseases annually, and 5.1 billion people are not covered by adequate social security -- where ⅔ of the world’s poor still resides in the AP region, despite its continued economic growth.

Affiliates are then called, as part of the ITUC-AP Campaign for Social Safety Nets, to initiate and advance consultation with national social partners to establish policies on their own social protection floors in: basic social security guarantees and regular income through improved national legislation, policies, and guidelines; national social security programs including quality public services; and tripartite participation to monitor progress in the implementation of the items above and other social security extension strategies.
