In this letter to Carrie Lam, Chief Executive of Hong Kong, Sharan Burrow, General Secretary of ITUC and Shoya Yoshida, General Secretary of ITUC-AP, strongly condemns the arrest of Lee Cheuk Yan, General Secretary of the Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions (HKCTU), an affiliate of ITUC-AP, and 13 democratic leaders. Lee Cheuk Yan is one among thousands of peaceful protesters who are being arrested for unlawful assemblies and rioting associated with the anti-extradition protests.

They urge the Hong Kong government to respect the people’s right to freedom of assembly, to drop all criminal charges against Lee Cheuk Yan and all the peaceful protesters associated with the anti-extradition bill protests, lift all restrictions on peaceful assemblies, stop anti-union discrimination and unfair dismissals, stop arresting and prosecuting people who participate in peaceful assemblies, and establish an independent commission of inquiry to investigate human rights violations, including excessive police violence and arbitrary detentions.
