Responding to the urgent need to promote and uphold peace, democracy, and human rights in the region, the ITUC-AP Regional General Council Meeting adopted five resolutions during its meeting on 10-11 March 2021.

“We campaign, we win. We lose, we fight back.” This encapsulates the struggles of union women in Asia Pacific in a world with COVID-19 shared by the members of the ITUC-AP Women’s Committee during their virtual meeting on 2-3 March 2021.

Countering the mounting outrage of the people of Myanmar over the military coup, Myanmar’s military declared martial law in major parts of the country in an attempt to further tighten its grip on the power and control that it seized after the general elections.

The International Trade Union Confederation – Asia Pacific (ITUC-AP) strongly condemns the unjust imposition of charges by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) police against 47 former opposition lawmakers and pro-democracy activists, including Carol Ng, the Chairperson of Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions (HKCTU), and Winnie Yu, Chair of the Hospital Authority Employees Alliance (HAEA) under the People’s Republic of China’s National Security Law in Hong Kong.

ITUC - Asia Pacific expresses its solidarity with Lee Cheuk Yan, General Secretary of the Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions (HKCTU), as he stands trial for nine criminal charges filed against him simply for exercising his freedom of speech, association, and peaceful assembly during the pro-democracy and anti-police brutality protests in 2019. His trial started yesterday, February 16th.

The ITUC-AP expresses deep concern over the detention of State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi along with other political leaders as well as the declaration of transfer of all legislative, executive and judicial powers to the military under a one-year state of emergency.
