In a pivotal high-level dialogue at the State Palace in Jakarta, ITUC-Asia Pacific General Secretary, Shoya Yoshida, and ITUC General Secretary, Luc Triangle, urged the President of Indonesia, His Excellency Prabowo Subianto to strengthen workers’ rights and labour protections in the ongoing review of labour legislations in the country.
Held on 10 November 2025, the meeting centred on Indonesia’s ongoing labour law reform following the Constitutional Court’s ruling, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to protecting and advancing the rights, welfare, and dignity of all workers. Discussions also covered a wide range of issues, including upholding democracy and promoting regional solidarity amid global labour challenges.
Shoya Yoshida welcomed the Indonesian government’s move to review and revise the labour legislation. He said:
“Indonesia has a unique opportunity to shape a new labour law that truly safeguards the fundamental rights of all workers. This will only be realised through genuine and meaningful social dialogue among workers, employers, and government.”
He also recalled and commended President Prabowo’s pledge during the May Day celebration in Jakarta to protect workers’ rights, improve living standards, and establish the Workers’ Welfare Council as a mechanism to ensure continuous social dialogue.
Meanwhile, President Prabowo Subianto reiterated his administration’s strong commitment to promoting decent work, fair wages, and social justice as integral components of Indonesia’s economic development strategy. He emphasised that sustainable economic growth must go hand in hand with the protection and empowerment of workers.
The meeting marked a significant step in strengthening cooperation between the Government of Indonesia and the ITUC. Both sides agreed to maintain close dialogue and partnership to achieve sustainable, equitable, and inclusive development, grounded in respect for fundamental workers’ rights and international labour standards.
