Amid growing threats to democracy, peace, and workers’ rights in the region, the ITUC-Asia Pacific Regional General Council, in its 27th meeting held on 15–16 October 2025 in Nadi, Fiji, adopted eight resolutions that reaffirm the labour movement’s steadfast commitment to advancing social justice, promoting trade union solidarity, and ensuring the dignity and welfare of all workers across Asia and the Pacific.
The 27th Regional General Council Meeting opened with a traditional Fijian ceremony and a message from the Honourable Sitiveni Ligamamada Rabuka, Prime Minister of Fiji, setting an inspiring tone for the meeting. In his message, the Prime Minister acknowledged that workers and trade unions are indispensable partners in advancing national development, upholding the principle that workers’ rights are human rights, and ensuring a future of work that leaves no one behind.

Building on this message that trade unions are key development actors, the Council moved to address the region’s most pressing challenges, culminating in the adoption of eight resolutions that reflect the collective voice and action of Asian and Pacific trade unions.
The adopted resolutions cover a wide spectrum of issues: the continuing repression of trade unions and workers’ rights violations in Afghanistan, Hong Kong, India, Myanmar, and Pakistan; the struggle for fair wages and social protection of Mongolian public service workers; the strengthening of the Pacific Island Council of Trade Unions (PICTU); and the global call for the total elimination of nuclear weapons. Together, they capture the ITUC-Asia Pacific’s collective response to the intersecting crises of authoritarianism, economic inequality, and shrinking democratic space that endanger both workers and societies across the region.
Shoya Yoshida, General Secretary of ITUC-Asia Pacific said:
“These resolutions represent the determination of Asian and Pacific trade unions to uphold peace, democracy, and social justice – values that are under attack in many parts of our region. They are more than statements of principle; they chart our collective action moving forward. They commit us to stand with affiliates facing repression, to push for social justice and decent work, and to engage internationally to demand accountability. Our collective strength lies in this solidarity, and our struggle continues until every worker can live and work in freedom and dignity.”
The 27th ITUC-Asia Pacific Regional General Council Meeting concluded in Nadi, Fiji, with delegates pledging to carry forward the resolutions through continued advocacy, campaigns, and regional cooperation.
