On 16 June 2011, the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council unanimously endorsed the “Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights: Implementing the United Nations ‘Protect, Respect and Remedy’ Framework” (UNGPs), developed by Professor John Ruggie of Harvard University – the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General on the issue of human rights and transnational corporations and other business enterprises.

Today, 28 May 2021, Lee Cheuk Yan has been handed a new sentence of additional 18 months of jail time for taking part in a peaceful pro-democracy protest on China’s National Day in October 2019. This is on top of the 18-month imprisonment sentence for his participation in the pro-democracy protest in August 2019.

In line with the commemoration of the International Year for the Elimination of Child Labour this 2021, the ITUC-Asia Pacific launches the #EndChildLabour Poster Competition on 12 May to raise awareness on the urgent need to take action to eliminate child labour in Asia and the Pacific.
